To be a Drum Major you also need to pass a B1s and Senior command course. That bit was missed. Average 17 years from joining until you are an appointed Drum Major!

1, I love this piece of music it’s so evocative, of many things for me watching the film in Ealing the year I left school and said goodbye to friends ( it wasn’t like these days when everyone is electronically connected) 2, I feel for the drummers at the Royal Albert Hall (though they are only playing snare drums and the lights are on, the Boys Brigade Centenary in 1983 with the 10th Hounslow BB pipe and drums. And whilst we rehearsed at my old school the music we couldn’t rehearse the arena or the stairs. And we for some reason couldn’t or didn’t have a run through at the RAH, I think it was on a bugle call we struck up with Scotland the Brave, at the top of the stairs (going down into the auditorium) no lights pitch black having to do a firemen’s thing of ensuring your back heel is against the riser, whilst keeping in time with a tenor drum (a tenor drum is twice the size of a snare drum and has no leg brace (unlike the snare) and even when the lights were faded in you could not see over your feet. Which at 13 was scary.
